What Separates a Great Executive Headshot from a Merely Adequate One
Authority and approachability in the same frame. This is the central tension in executive portraiture, and it is harder to achieve than it sounds. A headshot that reads as too authoritative — stiff, distant, formal to the point of coldness — is off-putting. A headshot that reads as too casual undermines the gravitas a senior executive needs to project. The goal is confident warmth: someone who is clearly in command and clearly worth working with.
Presence in the eyes. The most common problem I see in executive headshots produced by corporate in-house photo teams is flat eyes — technically competent images where the executive appears to be tolerating the process rather than engaging with it. Great executive headshots require direction, not just instruction.
Appropriate styling. Executive headshots in Toronto's financial and legal sector carry different conventions than those in the creative or tech industries. Understanding the visual language of each sector is essential.
What to Expect at a Portraits.To Executive Session
Every executive session begins with a brief but essential conversation: what is your role, who is your audience, and how do you want to be perceived? From there, we work through 2–3 setups — typically a formal look, a slightly warmer look, and optionally an environmental frame if that serves the context.
The session is designed to work within a busy schedule. Option 2 (1 hour) or Option 3 (2 hours) covers most executive needs effectively. All sessions include professional retouching, delivered within 5–7 business days.
